Kanye West and Charlamagne Tha God did an interview on April 18th. Kanye got everything off his chest during this interview. He talks about mental health, robbery in Paris, Jay-Z, business ventures, and Donald Trump.
Charlamagne opens the interview by asking Kanye, “Mentally, where are you?” Ye responds, “I think I’m in a stronger place than I ever was. After the breakdown—or I like to say, the breakthrough.” When asked about what he believes caused the breakdown, Kanye says, “Fear, stress, control, being controlled, manipulation, like being a pawn in a chess piece of life. Stressing things that create, like, validation that I didn’t need to worry about as much.”
Kanye also speaks about his wife robbery in Paris. He says, “I went to Paris on that trip to protect her. Not protect her physically, but to go and just help her with her looks ‘cause she’s in Paris. … One of the things that she said that she heard was that they were coming to rob her and they had to wait till I had left. The people had been strategizing and scheming on that for a long time. So when she finally got to Paris by herself, they were like, ‘OK, this is our chance.’ … If she wasn’t here, I would never forgive myself.” This also caused what he likes to call the breakthrough.
Around the twenty minute mark, Charlamagne asks Kanye if he went too far talking about Jay-Z’s family. “It depends on how you look at it,” says Kanye. “If we’re family, if we’re brothers…that’s my family. If we’re business associates and this, then it’s too far. Respectfully…I gotta say, I was hurt about them not coming to the wedding. I understand they was going through some things…If it’s family, you’re not gonna miss a wedding.”
Kanye reminisces about meeting President Obama and being called a “jackass” by the president. “You know, he never called me to apologize. The same person that sat down with me and my mom, I think should’ve communicated to me directly and been like, ‘Yo, Ye, you, you know what it is. I’m in the room and it was just a joke.’” He adds, “I just think that we were in a period where he had so much stuff to deal with, he couldn’t deal with a wildcard like me,” he says. “I think that’s too unpredictable. Someone that wasn’t being controlled by strategy and thoughts, but someone who’s acting on feelings.”
Kanye West talks about his former creative director Virgil Abloh taking the Louis Vuitton job. He’s not mad about it because it’s an opportunity for him to grow his brand next to Louis Vuitton. He said anybody that works with Yeezys won’t be able to do that.
Charlamagne Tha God asked Kanye if he thinks Donald Trump likes black people and he didn’t really respond to it. He also thinks his mom wouldn’t like Donald Trump. He really likes Trump because he was an outsider that broke through. When Trump first announced he was running for president nobody thought he would win but he ended up winning. That’s the main reason why he supports Trump.
