Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooter Nikolas Cruz says a demon in his head told him to kill innocent people the night before he carried out the attack, according to transcripts of a police interview that was revealed Monday.
Cruz shared with Detective John Curcio of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office that a male voice inside his head, which he called “the evil side,” encouraged him to “burn, kill, and destroy anything.” Cruz said he was in constant battle with “the voice.”
“The voice is in here,” Cruz said, pointing to his head. “And then it’s me. It’s just regular me trying to be a good person.” He told the detective.
Cruz also told Curcio that the voice was talking to him while he was there in the interrogation room, telling him to kill himself.
Although the teen has admitted to killing 14 students and three school employees on February 14, attorneys for Cruz are now arguing that he should be spared a death sentence and offering to have him plead guilty in exchange for life in prison without parole.
“This statement is just more proof of how severely damaged and broken a human being he is,” Howard Finkelstein, the Broward County public defender representing him, wrote in an email Monday. “He is the most damaged and broken human being I have encountered in 40 years of doing this type of work. Everybody knew it.”
According to ABC News, Prosecutors have ignored these offers, saying they will seek the death penalty for the former Stoneman Douglas student, who was indicted on 17 counts of murder in the first degree and 17 counts of attempted murder.
The state attorney’s office plans to release the video of the interrogation this Wednesday.
Also Nikolas Cruz is on tape talking about his plans to shoot up the school. Anybody who shoots up school has something going wrong mentally but Nikolas knew what he was doing was wrong.
